AN ACT To provide that the Music Hall Theater, located on Del Parque Street in the Municipality of San Juan, be designated as “Dr. Victoria Espinosa Experimental Theater” in acknowledgment of her distinguished contribution to the Puerto Rican theater and of her artistic legacy to the Puerto Rican culture during fifty (50) years of continuous work, thus becoming “The Dean of Theater Directors in Puerto Rico”. STATEMENT OF MOTIVES Victoria Espinosa was born in Barrio Santurce, San Juan, Puerto Rico on March 26, 1922. In 1940, she graduated from the Central High School. She specialized in Theatrical Arts in the Dramatic Department of the University of Puerto Rico, under the direction of Mr. Leopoldo Santiago Lavandero and Dr. Ludwig Schajoicz, from 1945-49.
Afterwards, she
taught several drama classes as a professor in said Department. From 1949 to 1964, she directed for the “La Comediata Universitaria” (formerly, “Teatro Infantil Universitario”) works of Moliére, Shakespeare, García Lorca and Maz Aub, among others. She also directed the play Don Gil de las Calzas Verdes, by Tirso de Molina, for the group “Teatro Rodante Universitario”. From 1964 to 1969, she completed her Doctors Degree in Theater, with Honorable Mention, at “Universidad Autónoma de México”. Upon her return to Puerto Rico, she founded the theater workshop “Teatro Theatrón de Puerto Rico”, whose students are currently renowned theater and television actors in Puerto Rico.
She directed many plays for the Theater Festivals sponsored annually by the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture since 1958, such as Los Soles Truncos, by René Marqués. She participated with this play, in 1959 in the Festival de las Américas during the Seventh Pan American Games held in the City of Chicago, United States. In 1965, she took said play to Salamanca, Spain, where she inaugurated the Calatrava Theater with it during the celebration of Puerto Rican Week in that city. Since 1949, she has b3een outstanding for her work as scenic director in over one hundred and twenty (120) plays, without counting the revivals, among which the following are outstanding: Así Pasen Cinco Años, Los Soles Truncos, Cristal Roto en el Tiempo, El Público, Areyto Pesaroso, Sol 13 Interior, Sacrificio en el Monte Moriah, El Negro en América, La Zapatera Prodigiosa, West Side Story, Equus, Contradanza, and El Beso de la Mujer Araña. She has written essays, playscripts for, and has translated several theatrical works. As part of her professional work, she has been an actress, has designed theatrical wardrobes and set designs. In 1985, held the position of Director of the Theatrical Division of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, obtaining in less than three (3) years, great achievements for the theatrical class, such as: the creation of the Puerto Rico Theatrical

Theatrical
Producers
Association, the acquisition of the Matienzo and Music Hall theaters, and promoted the project that ultimately became Act No. 8 of March 8, 1988, that created a Special Fund designated for the use of the Theatrical Division of the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture to promote the development of dramatic arts in Puerto Rico. In 1997, during the XII International Festival of Hispanic Theater, she became the first Puerto Rican theater person to receive the International
Lifetime Achievement Award, conferred annually by the “Grupo de Teatro Avance” in Miami, Florida, to a person who has dedicated her life to the theater, and leaving a permanent mark in the development thereof in her country. BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF PUERTO RICO: Section 1.- It is hereby provided that The Music Hall Theater, located on Del Parque Street, in the Municipality of San Juan, be designated as “Dr. Victoria Espinosa Experimental Theater”, in recognition of her outstanding contribution to Puerto Rican theater and for her artistic legacy to Puerto Rican culture during fifty (50) years of continuous work, thus becoming “The Dean of Theater Directors in Puerto Rico”. Section 2.- The Structures and Public Highways Naming Commission of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, attached to the Institute of Puerto Rican Culture, shall take the necessary measures to comply with the provisions of this Act, without being subjected to the provisions of Section 2 of Act No. 99 of June 22, 1961, as amended. Section 3.- This Act shall take effect immediately after its approval.

In San Juan, Puerto Rico, today 12th of February of 2003.
